In this podcast episode, the M&C team talks with Mike about taking the leap from being a for-profit marketing professional to working as a nonprofit development professional. Mike shares his experience and recommendations for those considering a similar transition.
Our favorite takeaways from this podcast conversation:
Work on your nonprofit writing skills. Writing nonprofit copy is a different beast—especially direct mail. Listen to people who have experience in this area and know what works and what doesn’t.
Prepare to wear a lot of hats. Get in there and be ready to hustle. Be able to step in and apply your experience to the new problems and opportunities you encounter.
Make sure your heart is in the right place. Put yourself in the donor’s and/or funders’ shoes. Remember your job isn’t to shout about how wonderful your nonprofit is, but to find what resonates with the people who will support your organization to realize their dreams and goals—to help support the kind of world they want to live in.
