Martha has been the Executive Director for Jackson County CASA since 2009.   During her tenure the organization has become one of the largest CASA agencies in the country growing to serve more than 1,200 children each year with over 360 active volunteers, a staff of 24, and a budget of $1.5 million.  CASA’s annual Light of Hope event, which is held in April each year, has grown to become the largest fundraising breakfast in the city, with more than 1,100 guests each year.

Gershun graduated with a B.A. cum laude from Harvard University and holds an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. She also earned a graduate diploma in Economics from the University of Stirling, Scotland, where she was a Rotary International Fellow. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the National CASA Association and is Past President of the Harvard Business School Club of Kansas City and the Harvard Club of Kansas City.  Gershun also currently serves on the Boards of the Kinnor Philharmonic Orchestra and Planned Parenthood of the Great Plains. In her spare time, she promotes events for poets and independent musicians, knits, colors, and struggles to build a consistent work-out regimen.


Invest in a good PR professional. It’s hard to brag on yourself, so let a pro do it for you.

Say “Thank You” early and often. Never forget to tell the people who make your work possible how much you appreciate them.

Transparency always pays off. Tell your Board the bad news, as well as the good – they deserve to know, and they will help if they can. 

Don’t rely on jargon, clichés, or catch phrases. Describe your mission and your activities in clear, direct language. Use verbs.

Develop a clear, consistent voice for social media. Facebook isn’t the company newsletter. No one cares about your staff birthday parties. Deliver content your readers will find interesting, informative, educational, and actionable.
