Rightfully sewn

For more than a decade, Godfrey Riddle has devoted his professional and personal life to assisting historically under-served populations, all while combining his love for the arts, architecture and urban planning into a career.

Godfrey’s career has included serving as the Director of Development for Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey and the Development Manager for ArtsKC. Currently, he is the Vice President of External Affairs at Rightfully Sewn. In his role, Godfrey ensures successful funding to fulfill the organization’s mission of creating jobs and opportunities through seamstress training, cultivating fashion designers and offering public sewing classes and small batch garment production. Rightfully Sewn has mobilized its resources during the COVID-19 pandemic to sew masks to donate to five area hospitals, as well as other healthcare providers in need. Highlights from our conversation:

  • Staying grounded, especially when the nonprofit work is close to your heart, is important.

  • Find one thing you love and see it through.

  • Establish what your organization can execute very well and do just that. Godfrey offers valuable insight into growing their Golden Gala event, all while avoiding donor & staff fatigue.

  • You can’t be all things to all people. Pace yourself.
